How To Follow The Moon Cycle

As women, many of us grow up in a linear world. We are taught to work Monday through Friday and take weekends off. We are expected to show up each day in a good mood, productive, creative, receptive, and ready to work hard without complaint. However, women don’t work in a linear way. In fact, we work in a LUNAR way. Half of the month we are rising and gaining more energy just like the moon comes into fullness, and half of the month we are descending and turning inwards just like the moon goes into darkness. Because our bodies mirror this cycle, we can use the lunar calendar to track and monitor our energy levels, sexuality, productivity, focus, and socialization.

Women who are menstruating naturally, meaning without hormonal birth control should follow their natural cycles first. Numerous factors influence if your menstrual cycle coincides with the moon cycle. It is most important that you follow your own unique cycle. Your body knows best and doesn’t need to sync with the moon in order to have a cyclic rhythm. This article is for those who have irregular periods or no periods due to pregnancy, health issues, or menopause. Women energetically cycle with the moon even when they are not menstruating. Those will still benefit from reading the menstrual cycle awareness article on the four phases of a women’s cycle.

Since a women’s psyche and hormonal changes are governed by the moon, women can follow the moon’s cycles to notice the changes they go through within a month.

New moon: When the moon is new, the sky is dark and the animals in nature tend to be more calm and quiet. This is the phase for women to rest. During this week of the month, take care to rest your body, tune into your intuition and spend your time reading, reflecting, journaling, and meditating. If you have any big projects or decisions coming up, this is the time to let the decisions go and reflect on what matters most to you. A lot of women gain clarity during this week and if used correctly as a time of reflection, great knowledge can come from taking this week with care.

Waxing moon: As the moon starts to grow, a woman’s energy can increase. Nature starts to wake up more and our spirits are renewed from taking a week of rest. Women may experience heightened creativity, socialization, and energy during this week. Use this week to start exercising more, taking risks, saying yes, getting outside, and making plans with friends. In work, this is the time to take on more projects and starting to work on networking and social connections.

Full moon: During the full moon energy is at its highest. Many cultures around the world have full moon festivals to celebrate the outward focused energy during this time. This is the week to take on big projects and presentations, launch business ideas, do big workouts, and connect with people. Plan your parties, work events, and projects that will take a lot of energy for this time.

Sleeping with exposure to the full moon may aid in menstrual cycle regularity because lunar light helps to reset the endocrine system.

Waning moon: As the sky starts to get darker again, use this energy to start to go inwards. This is a great week to finish up projects, start saying no, and start clearing your calendar for the rest week ahead. Finish last minute to-do’s, start toning down the workouts, start opening up to your intuition more through journaling and solitude. This week can be used as a time of discernment to tune into what feels really important in your life and what may be falling to the wayside or need to be delegated to others.

The more women start to follow their cyclic nature the more they may find they have balance, energy, and consistency in their lives. Many women find that tracking a few qualities of their lives for a few moon phases can help them determine the best times of the month for them to focus on events, rest, work, themselves, and relationships.
