How To Do What Makes You Feel Good

I have been on a spiritual journey since college, and maybe before that. In college I needed something more stimulating than classes and parties, so I started my 200hr Yoga Teacher Training and it changed the course of my life. I started asking the bigger questions about life and purpose and where I fit in. While this has been an incredible journey so far that has caused me to inquire about some of life’s greatest mysteries, sometimes I find myself stuck there. As an intellectual and perfectionist (even though it’s still hard to admit) I want to get things right. I want to do the right practices, read the right books, and ask the right questions. If I’m being completely honest, sometimes I’m jealous of the people who never started this path. Sometimes I feel left out when I see people enjoying life without feeling the burden of needing to answer all the greatest spiritual questions. Not to mention, they seem much less worried about having an unhealthy habit here and there and enjoying company.

I recently listened to a podcast by Sahara Rose and Gala Darling where Gala mentions that feeling good is our job. Well, if it’s a responsibility, my type A personality can get behind that! While listening to this podcast, I realized how little I prioritize feeling good. I structure my day around being productive, successful, and impressive, however, I rarely ask myself what would feel good right now? It’s an uncomfortable place to be in to think about prioritizing feeling good. I’m already anxious thinking about becoming lazy and eating chocolate cake all day. However, when I think about what makes me feel good though I think of trail running, eating amazing food, taking baths, reading, and spending time having long talks with my friends and partner.

I heard another quote from Elizabeth Gilbert, “What if our purpose in life is to be surrounded by people we love?” Well that would definitely restructure my priorities. That’s what will be on my mind this month. Here’s to feeling good and being surrounded by love!
